Educational Overview

The Two-year educational course that our students undertake is: -

BTEC National Certificate in Sport (Performance & Excellence)

The Sports Academy is very proud to be associated with Redbridge College, who, as our educational partner, deliver all academic aspects of the programme. The awarding body for the education is Edexcel.

What is a BTEC National Certificate?

A BTEC National Certificate is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen, you develop the skills you need to start a career.
It is equivalent to two A levels which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to get a job straight away or go into higher education first.
A BTEC National Certificate can be taken full-time or part-time and is equally suitable for school leavers and mature students.

What are the entry requirements?

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:

  • a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in Sport or a related subject
  • an Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject
  • at least FIVE GCSEs at grades A*- C
  • appropriate work experience.

What is the course structure?

The course is made up of 12 units - Eight core units which everyone takes, and four specialist units.

What subjects will I study?

Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Sport (Performance and Excellence)

Unit Core units — all eight units must be taken

  • 1 The Body in Action
  • 2 Health and Safety in Sport
  • 3 Training and Fitness for Sport
  • 6 Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • 10 Sports Nutrition
  • 16 Psychology for Sports Performance
  • 26 Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport
  • 27 The Athlete’s Lifestyle

Unit Specialist units — four units must be taken

  • 4 Sports Coaching
  • 11 Sport and Society
  • 17 Sports Injuries
  • 18 Analysis of Sports Performance
  • 20 Sport and Exercise Massage
  • 21 Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
  • 25 Work-based Experience in Sport

How is the course assessed?

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

What can I do at the end of the course with the education I have achieved?

BTEC National Certificates are valued by employers and higher education (Universities and Colleges).

For example, if you want to get a job straight away you could work in: -
· Sports Centres
· Leisure Centres
· Outdoor Activities Centres

However, if you decided to utilise your certificate and go to University or College, you could take a degree or a BTEC Higher National in subjects such as:
· Sports Studies
· Leisure Management
· Recreation Management
· Teacher training
